About the Artist

Gregory Christeas

United States

Over six decades, Gregory Christeas’ work has evolved through themes both personal and political. He confronted trauma in the Up the Moon series, captured the pulse of urban life in NYC Waterfront Reflections, and created optical poetry in The Glow and The Parallels Series—paintings that transform in changing daylight and reveal hidden dimensions under black light.

The culmination of Christeas’ lifelong artistic journey, The Parallels Series was decades in development. Shaped by the rhythm of waves and executed with wide spatulas, the technique allows color itself, rather than the tools, to meet the canvas. Each painting unfolds as a chapter in a visual language of movement, memory, and consciousness.

Born in Athens, Greece, in 1944, Christeas began painting at age five, encouraged by his mother to create freely and without fear. His creative life later became inseparable from his active resistance against Greece’s military dictatorship (1967–1974)—an experience that profoundly influenced his artistic vision.

Throughout his career, Christeas has participated in numerous group exhibitions and presented solo shows internationally. A major milestone arrived during the “Cultural Olympiad Athens 2004,” when the Ministry of Development and the Greek National Tourism Organization invited him to present a major solo exhibition featuring 125 paintings and three-dimensional works.

During the exhibition’s opening ceremony, Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos recognized Christeas and his fellow resistance fighters as national heroes for opposing the dictatorship and helping restore democracy to Greece. The event was also attended by Mr. Dimadis, President of the Greek National Tourism Organization. Curated by art historian Leontios Petmezas, the exhibition was installed with the assistance of the artist’s son, Elias Christeas.

Selected works by Gregory Christeas are held in prominent Greek museum collections, including the Historical Archives–Museum of Hydra and the Apeiranthos Museum of Naxos. He currently lives and works in Long Branch, New Jersey.
