Ye Olde Salutation Inn 1240AD A Trip Back To The 30’s My inspiration for this painting is my love of nostalgia, going back to a time when life was at a much slower pace without the technology of the now modern day. The pub is still open today but I’m afraid the surrounding area has changed somewhat. In this painting we’re looking up St Nicholas Street towards Hounds Gate. A lady is looking into the window of J.H. Toby’s est; 1929 considering her next purchase while the glamorous lady walking down the street glances across at the workman smoking his pipe and reading his paper as he awaits his lift to work. You can almost hear the sound of the next horse and cart clip clopping along from around the corner on the beautifully painted cobbles taking us back to the wonderful nostalgic life of the 30’s #oldnottingham #oldinns #nostalgia #buildings #cobbles #salutation #publichouses #originalart #deviantart

Stephen grew up in the sixties and right from an early age demonstrated a flare for wanting to be inquisitive and creative. Always watching and learning from others, taking things to pieces to find out how they worked, he was able to wire a plug at the age of five, and from then on went on to learn all sorts of skills from basic woodwork and building small projects to even making a wind up gramophone which actually did play 78 rpm records! His mother always said he took after his grandfather, her father, who could turn his hand to anything and although taking art at school, Stephen went on to become a master woodworker, running his own business until age 55 when he retired from this aspect of work and started his career as an artist. He’s painted a variety of artworks and commissions, working from home in his purpose built workshop and studio, and is now working on the ideas of Entrapment and Freedom in which he feels very strongly about, wanting to portray these ideas through his artwork. He also has other ideas too he’s working on, including one of reviving characters from the old musical films and moving them forward in time to our modern day. This idea stemming from his love of music, he being an accomplished pianist and writer and composer of music. He feels his love of music and being an artist really go together well and sit hand in hand allowing for a wonderful opportunity to express one’s inner self. He also enjoys writing poetry and creates beautiful artwork with accompanying poetry too, which helps express his thoughts behind the works and his love of the natural earth and all creation. His interests include Painting my original thoughts and ideas onto canvas using acrylics and oils Creation and the great outdoors Walking Keeping fit and exercising Travelling Driving Woodwork of all kinds including making bespoke furniture, wood turning and general carpentry and joinery Working with natural slate creating sculpture and making garden ornaments such as nest boxes and water features Music including playing piano writing song lyrics and composing music Reading Writing poetry Gardening He loves working on commissions too so please feel free to get in touch should you wish to have your favourite picture turned into a wonderful original work of art by Stephen
