About The Artwork

Yellow hair 2017 $75 acrylic colour on thai handmade mulberry paper(kada sa) , deckled edges, 10 x 13.5 in., 25.5 x 34.5cm Every now and again I decide to work on this amazing thick parchment paper. Here I just want to work with the blotter effect and a beautiful blue/ turquoise with a yellow contrast. The subject is from a sketch I did and found in my collection of rough sketches. This is a traditional mulberry paper handmade in Thailand. It’s a thick parchment like paper, strong, yet pliable. I have the paper made to this size to get the deckled edges which adds to the textural effect. Note the uneven edges are not present in the print. The close up picture is to get a better feel for the texture and brush strokes of the painting. Then there’s the work in progress, and the original sketch. Interested to have your idea painted in this style? Contact me. When considering framing bear in mind to not cover up the deckled edges. This is one of the specialties of the painting, one of its charms. It is best displayed framed with a cut mat board around the painting so as not to cover the edges, thereby putting some space between the art and the glass and bringing depth to the framed art. It can also be framed simply with backing board and pressed with glass over the front without causing damage.

I'm Canadian born now residing in Malaysia. I've been working professionally as an artist since 1980 ish… time flies. I have exhibited my paintings in Vancouver and coastal B.C., Bangkok, Singapore & Malaysia, areas I’ve lived in over time. Now I do it all online. I’ve traveled extensively over the years and you’ll see that people, places and cultures are a recurring theme in my art. I attach importance to papers I use for my paintings. Some are done on acid free watercolour papers, from 180lb weight to 300lb. I also use handmade parchment type papers. These are thick yet pliable, strong, with deckled edge that add to the look of my paintings. I’m still a passionate guy. I’m passionate about life and people, passionate about art and painting. And I feel really at my best when I’m putting all these things down on paper. I only wish I had more time to delve into all these activities of mine. But I work with what I have. My health sucks so I’m slowing down. And there's more: book illustration, portrait, comic strip, caricature. I also work with camera and computer, to create the images brush strokes just can't deliver. So follow my brush work and hopefully you’ll find that special painting meant just for you.
