ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Central to this work are ideas of memory, loss, friendship, nostalgia, a little bit of automatism, the past perfect subjunctive, the idea of finality, things that can't be measured, and event horizons. I am interested in what happens in the space between an event and the recollection of it. This painting is made on raw Belgian linen. The paint seeps and stains in some parts, and layers and thickly slathers in others. Attached hanging hardware.

Kim West is a painter. Her visual arts practice incorporates studio painting, mural making, and installation projects activated with collaborative performance. West is best known for her murals in the downtown Los Angeles Arts District, including her 5-story Only One Way Through on Hauser Wirth, which has been described as “dreamlike” by the New York Times. West’s work engages with memories, washy landscapes, and color-forward botanical motifs – where the creation of fractured realities become allegorical events. Her developing exploration of layer-painting work literally and figuratively expands on notions of what happens when sacred memories begin to fade. West works in Los Angeles, where she lives with her husband and two children.
