ABOUT THE ARTWORK
The underlying impact of COVID 19 for me was the inability to access new locales offering new stimulation both visual and physical. In addition to the disconnection felt from having to sever normal engagement with other people, the inherent wanderlust within me was left with no way to be satisfied. This piece was born of the expression of wanting to seek out a new destination to make a further connection with this world, and the visual and composition of this piece depicts something of a tattered postcard which is as close as you could come to anywhere during this difficult time. Creating under the conceptual moniker Department M, Daniel Marin’s paintings bring together elements of pop, abstraction, street art, carpentry and décollage, depicting colorful and surreal moments in time. Marin sources imagery from magazines, comic books, newspapers and many other forms of media, blending features from each to craft the images in his work. Each piece is created using a layering approach made up of steps of silk-screening, freehand painting, hand cut stenciling and collage work, producing impactful compositions built on the artist’s patience and pleasure. A self-taught artist from Miami, FL, Marin’s work portrays engaging scenes with underlying stories and hints of both humor and tension, all left for the viewer to piece together.
