ABOUT THE ARTWORK
In life, people try to control things and they just fall apart, so these are portraits of people for whom everything has fallen apart. I see it as a portrait of hubris where the gradual accumulation of failures can’t stand up to the stress. I want to create this picture of this mess because we often give these moral failings a pass and do not look at these people as they are.

Joe Turek received a BFA from Clarke University and a master's from Syracuse University. In addition to his creative output as an artist he was the assistant director of Talent Agency Teen Portfolio Development Inc. and a public school art teacher as well for over eight years. His current body of work is a process of undoing a portrait. A full lifelike or abstract portrait of a powerful person is painted using acrylic on encaustic wax. The wax is melted away to reveal the final portrait.
