About the Artist

P Cherry

United States

The works of P. Cherry combine the fluid color of South Florida with the strong influence of the artist's background in New York.
Her work exhibits a passionate obsession with images, colors and line, developing from intuition and inspiration without preconceptions into a vibrant and intriguing life of its own. Each canvas offers a secret glimpse into an intimate world of dreams and feeling shared by the artist and the viewer.

The unique vibrancy of her painting "Spiders at Play" caught the attention of Tri-Star Films producer who displayed the piece in several scenes of the movie "Band of a Hand." Her work has also appeared on the covers and various issues of the South Florida Home and Garden magazine and Aventura magazine. In 1993 Cherry appeared on Public Television on Expressions with Don Webb. In 1994 she was commissioned to paint ten large canvases for the lobby and Atrium of the Omni Rosen (Clarion Hotel Plaza) in Orlando, Florida. "Chef" paintings appear at the Quelph University (Culinary Institute) in Ontario, Canada.

Cherry's work and technique have become a well-known favorite in the South Florida cultural scene.

Statement from Artist - P. CHERRY:
I grew up living with a fabulous sister and my brother-in-law who was a great and successful cartoonist Lou Fine. In those preTV days people cheerfully dropped in on one another and as Lou worked at home, we were open to all drop ins who were mostly artists and writers in the field. Home was like class, we sat around doing sketches and discussing art. They spoke of my talent and I was much encouraged. Later on I took classes at Art Students League. I briefly remember taking classes with Hans Hoffman. I also did some fashion design classes.
I then married and had children and opened Poor Pearl boutique in Hewlett, LI, NY. My husband and I opened a factory in the East Village, as well, where we made our own label (rich hippie wear).
In my late fifties I went back to my original love of painting and amazingly enjoyed commercial success.

"I think when I paint, I float into oblivion and places that I've seen, places that I've read about, and places in my dreams come forth. When I'm painting, I don't know if there's anything in my mind because my hands move on their own accord and mixing colors become a great distraction. There's so much eagerness on my part-to get back to the canvas.
