An extreme close-up of leaves, their form broken by the interplay of light and shadow, with the sky jumbled in. The title was chosen as the leaves reminded me of a shoal of fish. It refers both to the cloud formation and the colours used which are reminiscent of mackerel! The paint is thickly applied, with some overpainting in a contrasting colour.

My work is about abstraction from nature and the nature of abstraction. I am interested in how ways of seeing become ways of thinking. Most of the paintings featured here are the result of a fascination of the interplay of light on leaves. The rhythmic patterns that emerge are concerned with both colour and perception. I was born and educated in Australia, lived many years in rural Portugal and now work from my studio in Cornwall.
