Art Description

Painting: Oil on Wood.

I used to work non-figuratively and continue to admire several abstract painters, particularly Sean Scully, Callum Innes and John Hoyland. My intention was to deal with perceived form whilst trying to keep some of the spirit of abstract painting. Small boxes provided a way in and formed the starting point for an ongoing series of works. In this, the red box sits centrally on a complimentarily coloured ground seen from an aerial perspective, which helps flatten the image. The reflective foil is painted representationally and helps connect the perceived to the “abstract” though in truth, all parts of this were observed from reality; the balance of the two realms is beautifully evident in the priests hats and spaces in Piero Della Francesca’s Exaltation of the Holy Cross at Arezzo.
