ABOUT THE ARTWORK

stroll the shore of maine; boulders, rocks, then stones blend right into the tide. this is a vivid 4 foot scroll from my ongoing series of coastal nature. traditionally scrolls were vehicles for displaying calligraphy and or paintings, capturing a feeling of nature or an idea, to be hung to set a mood, and changed often to match an occasion or season. my reinvention of japanese kakejiku are on synthetic material similar in appearance to rice paper, but stronger, waterproof and tear-resistant, and "framed", ie, hung on rods along the top & bottom edges

while i attended risd (rhode island school of design), my formal education was in industrial design, and i never touched a paint brush, nor took a painting course while there. i consider myself a self-taught painter, although the risd approach to all aspects of "the arts" is a major influence. the other major influence was growing up with a mother who teaches painting. my "painting career" only got under way when i joined a local art club after risd, where the structure of monthly shows, meeting other artists, and the all important pouring of wine for the openings was most beneficial
