About The Artwork

Through the process of creating this image, where I helped the tea leaves through "guided chance" on a sheet of ice, I suddenly saw the papers and leaves of Jeff Wall's "A sudden gust of wind" in the configuration of the tea leaves. I love the visualisation of that image (and the Hokusai image before it), where artifact (papers) and the natural leaves mingle, and I'd like to borrow that idea in my image, where the concept of shared, intertwined space and frozen time also plays a key part. The image is part of a series in which I explore a visual language I hope to use to examine traces of life. As such, they might be seen as visual statements carrying both a semiotic connotation of impurity, but not the least also what I hope to be a visual poetic oscillation between something that is both alien and yet intertwined with the experience of being human on this planet. The use of ice as a medium for what is really a kind of still life meditations has a lot of meaning, relating both to space and time. As a starter: the object has its own space on the treshold of our immediate reach, and this "frozen time" (unlike the photograph, maybe?) and space is slowly returned to us. But then something has happened - the photographic recording, among other things.

Finding great pleasure in the presence of the real, I try to make visual mediations that will help both myself and viewers of my art to appreciate the world we share. I live in Norway, where dark, fierce winters and luminous summer nights spans an arch over the lives of humankind in a special way. I grew up at the coast where fishermen crossed the treshold of "man's element" into the wet and fertile ocean. I currently live in one of Norway's most fertile agricultural lands: these are the terms of our existance: to sweat between dusk and dust.
