About the Artist

Emanuele Vitale

Italy

Emanuele Vitale is a conceptual fine art photographer based in Syracuse, Sicily. For over 20 years, he has used the Mediterranean Sea not as a backdrop, but as an epistemic space—a threshold where the human body negotiates its existence between presence and disappearance.

Unlike the majority of underwater photography which focuses on marine life or pool-based fashion, Vitale works exclusively in the open sea using natural light. His process is solitary and meditative, exploring the phenomenology of suspension. His primary series, "Ascetic," depicts the vertical struggle of the human figure rising toward the light, symbolizing spiritual transformation and the shedding of weight—both physical and metaphysical.

His work has received international recognition, including First Prize at the Monochrome Photography Awards (Conceptual) and the ND Special Discovery of the Year Award. In 2024, his solo exhibition "La Luce nel Mare" was held in a deconsecrated church in Syracuse, cementing his transition from photography to installation art.

Vitale's images are not about diving; they are about the universal human condition of being suspended between two worlds.

Education: Self-taught Master of Photography. Specialized in Underwater Conceptual Art.
