The starting point of the project was Paul Klee's painting “Angelus Novus" and “Theses on the Philosophy of History” by Walter Benjamin. Benjamin’s philosophic “Angel of history”, who turns his back to the future and confronts the past that lies before him like a heap of rubble, has become an emblem for commemoration of history as a catastrophe in the darkest hour of the European twentieth century. The prospects are different today than in 1940 when Benjamin wrote his theses, but we are undoubtedly living at a turning point and the world is changing right before our eyes. The 21st century is rich in global challenges such as world hunger and environmental problems, poverty, and social and economic inequality. What will happen to humankind, will it transform beyond recognition? Nowadays we are speaking to our digital assistants, our faces are being recognized by the ubiquitous cameras, and many people are scared of the pandemic on one hand, and of digital totalitarian control on another. “Angelus Novus Novus” makes history every day, as tomorrow starts the day before. Time is already compressed like a spring, and it seems that history is ready to repeat itself again at some mutated point. We need to take lessons of the past more seriously and, relying on past experience, not to overlook the signs and symbols of the history that is happening with us now. “A Klee painting named Angelus Novus shows an angel looking as though he is about to move away from something he is fixedly contemplating. His eyes are staring, his mouth is open, his wings are spread. This is how one pictures the angel of history. His face is turned toward the past. Where we perceive a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe which keeps piling wreckage upon wreckage and hurls it in front of his feet. The angel would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing from Paradise; it has got caught in his wings with such violence that the angel can no longer close them. The storm irresistibly propels him into the future to which his back is turned, while the pile of debris before him grows skyward. This storm is what we call progress.” W.
