‘Circle II: Identical Illusion’ is a self-portrait series that seeks to uncover the essence of my identity, deeply rooted in personal history and cultural background. The ‘Circle’ series draws from my childhood, marked by my parents' divorce and a transient life among various relatives. This instability allowed me to observe the power dynamics and contradictions within Confucian values in Korean society. The most profound influence was living with my aunt, a Korean shaman, for five years. Her guidance, along with exposure to shamanistic Buddhist art, deeply shaped my creative sensibilities and became a significant motif throughout the ‘Circle’ and ‘Circle II’ series. A shocking encounter during this period left a lasting impression, compelling me to revisit these early experiences through photography. This artistic process enabled me to transcend personal trauma and delve into the layers of my identity. Inspired by Korean folk art and traditional props, my work reveals distorted personas shaped by cultural and societal expectations. Drawing from Korean didactic tales, especially the notion that "the wicked fall and the good prosper," I cast myself in the roles of various fictional characters, intentionally twisting and exaggerating their personalities. Through these self-portraits, I explore gender fluidity, causing traditional moral dichotomies to collapse within me and rendering patience as a virtue obsolete. In essence, ‘Circle II’ is not just a quest to discover the unadorned, complete self but also an effort to balance personal narrative with cultural critique. By intertwining my experiences with broader societal issues, this series serves as a form of self-meditation, guiding me from imagination to reality and documenting my journey from immaturity to maturity.
