Our project is, in a certain sense, a reinvention of the Dutch Golden Age tulip mania, in a revamped and aesthetic version, focusing on the passion for the tulip beauty, but aimed at collecting and preserving it for the generations to come in all its multitude of facets. Besides documenting all the existing tulip species and their varieties, our purpose is to throw an artistic eye upon tulips through the magical magnifying glass of the photographic lens. The creative idea animating the project is to look inside the tulip world by magnifying every flower to the size of the human stature and capture it in great detail from different angles, by rotating it to 360°, in order to give the viewer the possibility to admire the myriads of colourful worlds unfolding within. BLACK BACKGROUND An invariable characteristic of all Tulipmania Art creations, the black background, is a feature revering the tradition of the Dutch Golden Age still life painting, where the deep dark to black backgrounds were typical for the floral still lifes. The Old Masters availed themselves of the black background for adding colour tension to their pieces, amplifying thus their emotional effect. Apart from being an act of reverence to the Old Masters, the black background of the Tulipmania Art creations, is an instrument for “distilling the essence” of the tulip, freeing it from any external influence, neutralising the distracting visual factors and allowing the tulip to shine in all its splendour, almost levitating in the black space surrounding it. A HYMN TO THE WITHERING TULIP A very special and cherished component of Tulipmania Art brings into the limelight the elegant beauty of the withering tulips. Inspired by the vanitas still lifes of the Old Masters of the Dutch Golden Age painting, it goes however beyond their idea of ephemerality, being intended not to remind of the transience of life, but to draw attention to the noble traits the age brings about. By observing the tulips while gradually advancing in their ripe days, we managed to capture in thousands of shots that incredible, so often unnoticed, almost magnetic beauty of the fading tulips. That is why this series is by no means to be regarded as a mere documentation of one of the natural phases of the tulip life cycle, but as a glorifying hymn to the tulip’s upright and graceful ageing. Formation in graphic and media design, specialising in photography, received in Munich, Germany. Professional photographer since 1998.
