Having built a reputation for nighttime studies, I decided to venture into the unsparing sunlight of Death Valley and produced images evocative of that stark, timeless landscape. I believe my luminous photographs demonstrate a subtle touch suitable to the grandeur and delicacy of the terrain highlighting the varied tonal changes of these majestic hills of sand. There’s a melancholic desert beauty I tried to capture. The photos, sweeping and with no living thing in sight, accentuate the isolation and remoteness of the area, as I found himself alone in this prehistoric landscape. This is no mean feat in a national park visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. Death Valley is facing a threat in the form of drastically shifting weather patterns, with adjoining areas devastated by flash floods in 2004. Reason enough to preserve and document that evolving environment. I used a meticulous handcrafted process called lith printing, a hallmark of my style, with delicate, warm tones that make the desert come alive with the light and shadow of the passing morning.
