About The Artwork

William Guion has photographed the Louisiana landscape and live oaks for more than 30 years. His black-and-white and hand-colored “oak portraits” reveal the majestic and mystical qualities of this much-loved species of tree. He was introduced to photography as part of his journalistic studies in college and pursued his training as student and assistant at several workshops offered through The Friends of Photography in Carmel, CA. Following a workshop instructor’s advice to “find something you love and photograph it again and again,” he began a series of live oak studies on his native Louisiana soil in the mid-80s. In 2000, after his father’s death, he moved to California to reconnect with his early inspirations and began a new series of landscapes with a focus on aiding the conservation of shrinking oak woodlands. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, he returned to Louisiana to work on “The 100 Oaks Project” – an ongoing effort to document and promote conservation of the oldest surviving live oaks in Louisiana and the Gulf South.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

The skills I've learned as an analog film and digital photographer and advertising creative director are all utilized in my work. My early influences were large-format black-and-white photographers of the California Central Coast and the impressionistic landscape painters of the 1900s. My Southwest images begin as black-and-white photographs, from both negative and infrared digital images. I "abstract" the images and then paint them, using multiple thin layers of oil paint. Larger sizes are available by commission.
