About The Artwork

"Ford" is a series of photographic collages. The photographs were taken between Oakland, California and Atlanta, Georgia in July and August of 2012. The collages were made in 2013. A refinement of the questions in my series "Materials", "Ford" gets more specific about what types of things change our perspective and memories of a place and time. Our perception of time is relative to our velocity and the gravitational forces that are always effecting us. Although the changes are slight and immeasurable by man-made devices, we know from formulas that with greater gravitational force, time slows and space bends. In "Ford", I've examined the effect of velocity when traveling great distances in a short period of time. A trip across the country in a car fits nicely in a single package. The trip is so fast that millions and billions, trillions of details are lost, leaving a clean, digestible abstraction. The general mood of your trip, with a few key moments thrown in for dynamics. If I were to have walked from Oakland to Atlanta, I would have too many photos and stories to fit them all into a single image or even a single book. Time would pass so slowly as I dredge through the weight of the gravity pulling my feet to the ground and the details of each space I moved through would present themselves more and more boldly the slower I travel. And the slower I travel, the volumes that could be written about a single grain of dust. In our cars, we accelerate and shorten space and time itself. Although this manipulation of space and time effect is very subtle on it's own, modern culture has created an environment seen mostly through a car window. These works study the emotional effect on this manipulation of space and time.

As we learn new things, what we understand about reality must adjust respectively. Through his work, Dillon explores the limits presented by the subjective experience to observe the building blocks of the world around us. Deeply curious about the structure of the universe and ourselves, he marries studies in quantum physics with his artistic influences to address the circumstantial nature of the human dilemma. Through brief suggestions, pared down performative actions and a quiet, contemplative arch through his work, he opens a space for the viewer to understand their own experience and question the certainty of the human condition. To feel strange in a place and not know why. To feel lost on a street you’ve always known. With a strong foundational influence from artists such as Diebenkorn, Martin, Ryman and Stella, there are also very clear, connections to the writings and approaches of artists like Nauman, Morris, Hesse, and LeWitt. Through all of this, his romantic outlook on life maintains, in his work, the tranquility of Ader, Alys, and Turrell. Based out of Oakland, California, Dillon has a BFA in printmaking from California College of the Arts and Crafts. His practice now spans print, photography, sculpture, writing, as well as performative and ephemeral works.
