It’s easy to ignore the past, the dark, forgotten spaces that were once so familiar. But the past formed who we are today, whether we remember it or not. In Stark County we have buildings that we walk by every day, buildings that are older than our grandparents, that have witnessed stage coaches and Model Ts. Many of these spaces are empty and undeveloped, but thanks to a handful of people with historic vision, they remain here, just out of sight. I've had the opportunity to photograph some of these interiors. They are hauntingly beautiful, bearing witness to the concealed secrets of history: the intrigues of the ballroom, the bedroom trysts, the weariness of the factory. I photograph what it feels like inside these buildings, rather than simply illustrating what they look like. I look for angles and perspectives that create dynamic interactions between deep shadows and bright highlights. Colors are vibrant, rich, and intriguing. They unexpectedly surprise, a welcome sight in a sea of dismay. The textures, tones, and colors evoke a strong sense of timelessness and mystery. What hides clandestinely in those dark shadows? What is it the light reveals? What happened here so many years ago? Some spaces are large and expansive, others, small and confining. It’s easy to wonder who walked those floors, what deeds were done within their walls. Most of us will never see these spaces. We walk by, not knowing they are here, hidden treasures just out of sight. They've been here for years, a testament to our heritage, to our persistence. This work explores the secrets hidden in these spaces. Prints are Giclee on Watercolor paper.

Michael Barath is a photographer, educator, and human being living in Canton, Ohio. He is a perpetual student of photography as well as an instructor at Stark State College where he has been teaching for 25 years. Michael has been photographing for many years, seriously for the past 22, when grandchildren Hannah and Ayden were born. He’s always been emotionally connected to photography because his mother was an amateur photographer. Perhaps he is trying to extend her legacy by creating something of his own. Throughout Michael’s life he’s had and internal debate – is it better to be pretty good at a lot of things, or world class at one thing? Unfortunately, he’s never had the attention span to commit more than a couple of years to any one pursuit: birding, climbing, bicycle racing, dog training, and more. That is, except photography. Here, he actually combines all his interests with photography by using them as subjects. Michael doesn’t know if he has the talent to be world class, but so far the camera strongly holds his attention. Much of Michael’s personal work centers on nostalgia, in particular, feelings from childhood. This is something, of course, that only he can remember. But the wonder of artistic expression lies in its ability to evoke memories in others: a threadbare bedspread, a rusted hand pump, a counter-top juke box, a set of worn stairs, a wooden screen door. Michael remains fascinated with the connotative nature of art: how a piece will evoke different memories and feelings in each individual who experiences the work. His greatest accomplishment is when he can make others feel, tickle their hearts, give rise to a tear, unearth the key to a secret garden.
