About The Artwork

Animals are so much fun to photograph but I was particularly in love with photographing these Bison. Mainly because I hadn’t come so close to them ever before. It is not an animal I am use to seeing driving around the countryside. I was so fascinated. It was very relaxing to watch them move and interact with each other. Their life is so much easier than ours; they wake up, wander around, maybe play a bit, and eat and eat some more. Then they go back to sleep and do the same thing again the next day. Bison can be extremely dangerous though, once they start charging they will not stop. Bison are tough, confident animals that will often react aggressively when they sense danger. Many human activities can seem threatening to bison, so it’s always important to keep plenty of distance. Luckily for me I was in the safe hands of the farmer who knows and trusts his herd well. Such a magnificent beast.

After growing up in Australia and teaching for a few years I set off for an adventure in the UK where I met the man of my dreams. A kiwi, in fact. Little did I know that this chance encounter would lead me to a life with him in New Zealand working on the family farm. I had always been a city girl at heart but I fell head over heels with rural life. The breathtaking scenery of New Zealand had me well and truly captivated as did rural living and the gorgeous animals on the farm. HQ is an 1100 ha farm in Hororata, about an hour west of Christchurch. It is my husband Fraser’s family farm, a far cry from my upbringing in the Australian suburbs. My photographic journey began as a family photographer. As a former primary school teacher, I developed my love of photography while living in the Wairarapa, when the school I was teaching at sent me on my first photography course so I could teach it as a class at the school, and then before long, I was photographing families as a side hustle and quite enjoying it! However, once we moved to the family farm I couldn’t stop taking photos of the animals around me while I fell in love with my new life. When I am not looking after my children, I will be wandering around our farm or surrounding farms photographing animals. It was a way to capture those unique split second scenes and make them last a lifetime. It started simply with a stunning highland cow print on my wall that got so much attention from my friends and family that I was overwhelmed with requests to hang moments I had captured on their walls too. Every farmer had a story, every animal had a personality and my photoshoots became their own adventure. Before too long, and much to my delight, I found myself with a full-time business on my hands. I am so lucky to know have created a fine-art series for people to enjoy and live with in their every day life and hang inside their homes or businesses all over the world.
