About The Artwork

This series of doorways documents the downtown architecture of Johannesburg over the past 120 years as buildings evolve and the city around them shifts. Each tells a story of the people who built it, their origins and aspirations, told through the architectural details. It also tells of a booming mine town in its early days - shops, bank, cathedral, synagogue, post office, bar, apartments etc - each is represented. i have photographed them over the past 10 years as the downtown area emerged from years of neglect, and many are now being restored.

James Delaney is a South African artist working across multiple disciplines - printmaking, drawing, painting, sculpture - from a large studio in Victoria Yards near downtown Johannesburg. He has won several awards including BASA and SAIA, work is in collections including Merrill Lynch Bank of America, the Constitutional Court of South Africa and the City of Johannesburg, and numerous private collections. A lot of his work references the remnants of history in the world around us - wildlife which once roamed urban areas, or the stories told by architecture and doorways. He has always travelled a lot, both in the wilderness spaces of Africa and the built up cities of the world, working every year in New York. More recently he has become known for his work restoring The Wilds, a 40 acre park in central Joburg which had been largely abandoned, and where he has installed 100 sculptures which show the wildlife which once lived in these hills.
