Last Rite Photograph - Limited Edition of 50

In 1965 Malcolm X was assassinated in front of a crowd of people as he gave a speech in the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem. Although he was a famous and courageously outspoken Black Muslim leader, very few people from the American Muslim community stepped up to perform his janaza (Islamic burial ritual) due to fear or retaliation and murder. Malcolm X was a hero to countless people - both known and unknown to him. One of the people who loved him from afar was Hisham Jaaber, an African American Muslim leader from New Jersey. I was inspired by the way Hisham Jaaber - an absolute stranger to Malcolm X, courageously cared for him in his death ritual as if he were his true brother, inserting himself into the story of Malcolm X at a time when he and his family so desperately needed support. I want viewers of Last Rite to consider what they would do if their hero died and needed their help in their. I want viewers to feel that they can be a hero at any moment so long as they choose courage. I want viewers to think about their purpose and consider what Malcom X died for. What would you die for? I am inspired by the conceptual arts movement and often use the most simple gestures - like whiting out faces, to convey meaning. As an artist who is heavily invested in both abstract and archiving/ documentary practices, I approach history and the telling of important stories from a personalized vantage point, seeking to drawing the viewer into the story while allowing them to explore various vantage points. For me, history is abstract and we are doing our best to piece together stories. What matters most to me is that the viewer connects and is inspired. Last Rite was created through a process that involves manual Lithograph printing and ends in photography. Each Limited Edition print is signed on front an numbered by the artist
