About The Artwork

The incredible natural beauty of New Zealand's South Island is a great challenge to capture in a way that does justice to the scenery. In this instance I elected to process the image in a high contrast fashion to emphasise the relationship between the wispy, ephemeral clouds and the solid, timeless mountain. The single buoy, contrasted by the bright reflection of the clouds, provided an interesting focal point to the image. This artwork is available as a pigment ink print on museum quality archival fine art paper, printed to the highest professional standard. For custom sizing please contact curator@saatchiart who will liaise with me, to meet your requirements.

Jan qualified as a graphic designer and filmmaker from the Pretoria Technikon and is in the process of completing a Masters degree at the University of Cape Town. Being raised on a farm in the middle of South Africa instilled a great love of nature, as well as a passion for exploration and learning in him. Together with a desire to create stunning images, he was inspired to venture further afield - to 50 countries across the globe, from the natural paradise of the Okavango Delta in Botswana, to war torn in Kabul, Afghanistan, whilst working as a freelance documentary cameraman for broadcasters such as National Geographic Television, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, CNN and the BBC. This has given him a rare glimpse into the lives and cultural practices of many different people and an insight into the environmental challenges that we, as a civilization, face. His work is informed by a wide range of interests - from Natural Science to History, Music, Journalism, Film and Art. Jan is inspired by the Dutch and Flemish Masters' use of light and by fellow artists like Obie Oberholzer, Nick Brandt, Alejandro Chaskielberg and David Goldblatt.
