This photograph of the 500-year-old stone Moai statues of Easter Island captures one of the most spiritual moments of my life. I took it in the middle of a pitch-black starlit night and required a 20-minute exposure. The statues were illuminated with a splash of focused light painting. The curved lines in the sky are stars reflecting the earth’s rotation and the circular pattern in the right sky represents the location of the North Star. The Moai statues, which are symbols of power and meant to ward off enemies, average 13 feet in height and were created to pay homage to the islanders’ Polynesian ancestors. Of the 900 initially sculpted, 400 remain on what is one of the most remote inhabited places on earth.
