Tangled up in Beauty
With my photographs, I hope to evoke an awareness of one’s own journey through our natural longing to connect with nature. That connection is what I seek to bring into existence in my images, where “inner self” is un-veiled through vulnerability. The layering of my images, portraits blended with natural elements, embodies that divine connection.
These images are Pigment transfer prints onto Mulberry paper. First, each sheet of paper is coated with Oyster Shell Pigment, an ancient Japanese technique called Nihonga. Then the paper is coated with a golden bronze under-layer. This process is ritualistic to me as each unique piece moves on from old life to new but carries over with it all the imperfections of time. These wrinkles and cracks add beauty and character to the finished work. The translucence of the flora gives us a glimpse of what is beneath the surface of the human spirit. The layering of my images with human and flora embodies a divine longing for connection to nature. The process reveals to us the revelation of beauty in brokenness and prepares the way for beauty to take hold and entangle us. Tangled up In Beauty. The photographs can not fully show the shimmering beauty of the golden/bronze underlay of each transfer.
