"When I started this project in 2008 I was not sure what I was looking for, I just felt the urge to capture what was in front of me on a daily basis. I realized quite quickly that while I am drawn to recording the energy of the city, my passion is portraying what the energy does to each person who walks through its streets. It is the people that interest me most, portraits of strangers, fellow travelers, walking, talking, remaining in silence. Often an aloneness within the crowds. I would love to record every single human being I pass. I use a small digital camera, handheld and not hidden, but unobtrusive enough not to attract too much attention. The shutter becomes my personal pause button, freezing the moment, frozen reality so to say."

Rainer Hosch’s migration from Vienna to New York City and finally Los Angeles has informed the evolution of his photographic practice. In New York City he focused on documenting the streets, observing urban spaces with raw edges and most importantly the people within. The exploration of street photography is rooted in his work as a portraitist. Hosch’s second solo exhibition featured black and white portraits or more accurately mug shots of popular culture icons. When he arrived in Los Angeles, Hosch and his family moved to Topanga Canyon, removed from the dense urbanity of the city. Rainer Hosch was born in 1970 in Vienna, Austria, and moved to New York in 1997. He studied photography at the Institute for Teaching and Research in Graphic Arts, Vienna, and at UCLA. Rainer Hosch is represented at the National Museum of Photography in Denmark.
