Nebulae A bright white light? Eternal darkness? It is my conviction that after our death our spirit, our soul, travels to its origin somewhere in the universe. Once arrived, our energy is reunited with the energy from which everything around us once originated. As we know from the beautiful photographs taken by the Hubble telescope, the energy visible to us in the universe consists of light from countless stars. This light illuminates enormous gas nebulae in many fascinating colors. This is how I like to see myself. As a very small colored particle of dust that, after leaving this physical existence, returns to such an infinitely large, multicolored cloud of gas and dust. The way there is an enchanting journey through space. Alternating between silent darkness and clouds full of light, color and tranquilizing sounds. After that long, fascinating journey, we arrive at our designated spot in that infinite space. In the project 'Nebulae' I wanted to visualize that journey. This is how this series came into being, made by transforming nine photos of sunsets over the North Sea along the coast of the Thy region, North Jutland, Denmark. The series ‘Nebulae’ has its own, collection here on Saatchi Art. Limited Edition prints are available in any size you desire in centimeters or in inches, up to the below mentioned maximum. With my artworks, I hope to tease and stimulate more than just your sight. I want you to sense what I sensed when I made the artwork; the light, the temperature, the atmosphere... sometimes even the scent of a damp autumn forest and the cold of the whirling salty breath of a storm on the beach of the North Sea. In this way I ask you to reflect for a moment on the nature around you, on the beautiful feeling that nature can evoke, on what we will lose if we continue on the path of 'never enough'. My main inspiration is the vulnerability of nature. I see changes in nature. I see the effects of urbanization, the pressure of pollution and of the changes in the climate. I hope to make people aware of that vulnerability by sharing what I feel when I look around me. My work is often described by others as abstract, minimalistic and impressionistic. My style is distinct and pure, and is characterized by soft colors, soft focus and the effects created by how I move my camera during making the photo. I like experimenting and exploring the limits of what the camera can handle. I myself often describe my styles as abstract realism and (surrealistic) impressionism. I mostly work in nature where I immerse myself in the shapes, colors, sounds and stillness of the natural surroundings. My work can be described as the most pure form of fine art photography, since I choose to create the abstract and impressionist effects as seen in my photographs, using only the basic camera settings. Photo software is used only to remove dust or to adjust brightness, contrast and cropping to improve my compositions. I don't manipulate my photos and I don't use digital editing tools or filters. The titles of my photos are an important element of the entire work of art. In addition, I often write a short poem or a few lines of prose to a photo. Born in 1959 in the city of Gouda in The Netherlands, I now live with my wife and dog in a small farmhouse in the Danish Thy region in North West Jutland. In the summer of 2018 my wife and I moved from a larger city in The Netherlands to a small hamlet in the Thy region. We fell in love with this region about ten years ago... We live a simple, minimalistic life, as self sufficient and sustainable as possible, and we love it... My photography has been sold and exhibited in various countries all over the world.
