ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I've spent the past years reinterpreting the strong geometry of architect Mies van der Rohe, the man who proclaimed, 'God is in the details.' True to his words, in this image I focus on a detail he probably wouldn't approve of: one of the sculptures adorning the large plaza which surrounds his final opus: the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. And what's revealed behind this rich textured steel is an abstract in dramatic color of the steel and glass curtain wall of the museum: the curves of the sculpture offering counterpoint to the unrelenting geometric grid beyond. So really, this image is less about specific architecture and more about the relationship of beautiful forms. Printed professionally on archival cotton rag bright white paper with a matte finish and 2" borders. When framing, I recommend trimming the borders and mounting the image so that it projects slightly off the matboard on which it floats to heighten the drama within a simple metal frame. This image is featured in my new book: 'Reimagining Mies'.

Larry Simon takes his inspiration from seemingly everyday objects, surfaces and scenes to create dreamlike narratives shrouded in a sense of the unknown: the Inner World residing in our subconscious--a place where we cannot fill in all the blanks. As a photographic artist, he often works with a blend of sharp and soft focus, presenting his work in photo collage form or as digital prints. A constant roamer, Larry Simon is based in Chicago. Influences: Gerhard Richter, Saul Leiter, Haruki Murakami, Alfred Brendel
