Perched on a hilltop in central Portugal, Óbidos is a town where history seems to stand still. Its origins can be traced back to the Roman era, when it served as a vital outpost due to its strategic location. Later, the Moors fortified Óbidos in the 8th century, constructing the original walls that still encircle the town today. In 1148, the town was reclaimed by Portugal’s first king, Afonso I, during the Christian reconquest. Over the centuries, Óbidos became a beloved retreat for Portuguese royalty. In 1282, King Dinis gifted the town to his queen, Isabel, beginning a tradition where Óbidos was often presented as a wedding gift to queens of Portugal. This royal connection brought prosperity and further development, evident in the town’s stunning architecture and well-preserved medieval charm. Walking through Óbidos is like stepping into a living museum, with its winding cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses adorned with bougainvillea, and the imposing medieval castle that dominates the skyline. Each corner of this enchanting town tells a story, from the ancient aqueduct to the richly decorated churches that have stood for centuries.
