About The Artwork

At 8:15am on 6th August 1945 an atomic bomb exploded over the city of Hiroshima. A little girl of age two was one mile away from the centre of the blast but survived, When she was eleven she was diagnosed with leukemia and was expected to die within a year. Her name was Sadako Sasaki. Inspired by the Japanese legend that is you fold 1000 paper cranes your wish will come true, she began folding cranes from her hospital bed. It is not known if she managed to complete the task before she died on the 25th October 1955. The tradition of making paper cranes has continued and schools from around Japan an beyond send garlands of cranes to be hung from the Children's Peace Memorial in Hiroshima. The photograph forms part of my "Shunkan" collection of Japanese "Moments".

Photography has formed a major part of my life since I was first introduced to the magic of the darkroom at school in the 1980's. Over the year and now at the age of 51, I have seen the transition of photography from film and the darkroom and I have embraced the change to digital formats and computer aided development. However, it is my belief that photography is still primarily all about the image rather than the process. It is my intention that my photographs go beyond the composition and aesthetic but have deeper emotional and philosophical meaning. Some will have sensory impacts such as warmth, cold, sounds movement, some will aid thought and contemplation at a spiritual level, whilst others intend to ask questions and challenge our perceptions of reality. I current live in a small town in Yorkshire, England providing a rural, and urban environment in which to gain photographic stimulus. The other sources for my photography are from my travels across the globe in Europe, Asia and Africa.
