Persian Yoga - Zurkhaneh Photograph - Limited Edition of 10

As I ventured through Yazd, a city that has captured my heart numerous times, I found myself drawn to the ancient allure of a traditional zurkhaneh late at night. The 'House of Strength', as it's known, typically echoes with the exclamations of men engaged in this venerable sport, a domain where women often remain onlookers from the margins. Captivated by the intricately tiled entrance, which speaks volumes of the old-world charm with its richly decorated tiles set upon brick, my camera lens was busy soaking in the ambiance. It was during this quiet exchange with the architecture that a sportsman, an athlete of this manly discipline, noticed my presence. The entry to this realm of masculinity and tradition was a descent down a set of stairs, where the sportsman, upon his exit, saw me perched at the top. With an inviting gesture, he beckoned me to enter into their world. Graciously accepting the offer, I descended into the zurkhaneh, a place where, despite the vigorous exertion and physical prowess on display, the air was surprisingly imbued with a scent that was powerfully and pleasantly aromatic. © Golnaz Jamsheed (2011).
