ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Bullfighting in Peru In the Andes, where there is a syncretism between the pre-Inca and Hispanic culture.  In their patron saint festivals, the Andean population includes masses, dances, banquets, processions and bullfights. According to tradition – there are no reliable historical data – the first bullfight took place in the year 1538, on the occasion of the defeat of the Almagristas by the Pizarristas in the battle of Salinas, near Cuzco.  In the 18th century (1766) the Acho square was built, one of the most ancient squares in the world. There is no other show in Peru that brings together so many compatriots;  not even soccer compares to the popularity of bullfighting in this country, it’s a Peruvian cultural expression, genuine and legitimate. In Peru there is a ruling of the Constitutional Court of the year 2011, which declares bullfighting as an expression of Peruvian cultural diversity.  And article 17 of the Constitution orders the State to promote expressions that are part of cultural diversity, for which reason it is prevented from prohibiting them or adopting any measure that could cause their extinction. In Peru, more than 650 bullfights are held every year;  in all kinds of squares;  from modest arenas for a few thousand fans, to huge arenas for more than 10,000 spectators.  There are very few departments in Peru where bullfighting is not organized, both on the coast and in the mountains.   All prints are made by the author and are printed on a Canon Pro 4000 printer with Lucia mineral pigments, on Canson Platine Rag cotton fine art paper.
