Original: Photography and mixed media (household paint, Indian ink, spray paint, pencil and wax pastel) onto Fabriano 310gsm paper. Created in 2019. Size (in grey wooden frame): 58.6 x 77 cm. The frame has both mirror plates and cord hanging system. Tag details: Leicester Museum | Pied wagtail (species: Motacilla alba). Found in Evington, Leicestershire on 21 May 1975. Sex: Male. Lucy's recent solo exhibition ‘Bird Skins’ at the Lightbox Gallery in Leicester was inspired by Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours, an early colour dictionary outlining colour matches across the natural kingdoms. Stevens was granted access to the natural science collections at New Walk Museum in Leicester to create artworks focusing on the order, variety and beauty of colour in nature. Her new collection is known for its bold, instinctive mark-making techniques using photography as a starting point and layering with acrylic and house-hold paint, wax pastel, spray paint, Indian ink, graph paper and genuine 24-carat gold leaf.

Lucy Stevens is a British Contemporary artist whose work explores our relationship with the natural environment on a social and cultural level. She draws inspiration from ornithology and colour theory. She is also an amateur birdwatcher. Her projects often include working in collaboration with experts in the natural world including scientists, museum curators, ornithologists, photographers and musicians. She creates mixed media abstract portraits of birds on paper, and sound works developed from gathering field recordings. Her most recent work in partnership with The British Trust of Ornithology and the Wildlife Trust explores the effects of climate change on birds via a body of mixed media artwork, some of which is informed by research that demonstrates declines in bird populations and changes to bird behaviour (migration and egg-laying) due to extreme weather changes. This work was exhibited in May 2021 at StudionAme, Leicester. Lucy lives and works in Leicester. She received an MA and BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Nottingham Trent University. Her work has been shown in exhibitions and art fairs across the East Midlands, Yorkshire, East Anglia, and London. She has also taken part in artist residencies in Scotland, Brussels, France, and Sweden.
