About The Artwork

Nwando Ebeledike is a photographer inspired by telling the stories of identity, masking as a way of life, alternative realities and the 'others', people that identify differently from what society calls 'normal'. This photo is part of my series 'Free Us Make We Off Mask' To be african and visually presenting in a different way from the norm, a way that society has not given you permission for is a revolution; a forcible throw of social order. Throughout history, revolutions have always lead to violence, we are not exempt. We are persecuted daily for the difference in us. Our families love us less silently, our society ostracizes us, our lovers only love us at night and not in broad daylight. We are a fetish, an abnormality. One that people are willing to stop at like a lonely motel within a 200km radius but never ever are we the final destination. So we find each other, choose each other, create a chosen family and build a home made up of our love mixed with our sorrows. When this happens, we finally have the blessing to show our faces, to take our masks off and place them next to our chosen family’s mask. "Free Us Make We Off Mask" is pidgin language for "Let Us Be Free So We Can Be Ourselves". In a broken world, the only appropriate language to use is also a broken one. The mask in the photo represents a person that has masked for survival so long that the mask becomes him and he no longer knows where he ends and his mask begins. The love he finds may allow him the safety to one day show his face
