About The Artwork

Lion Dancer was made in 2018 in Guangzhou, China for my series 'Reveries'. *The work is made on a fiber based silver paper in my Brooklyn darkroom. The oversized art is mounted on aluminum composite panel to retain the fiber paper's flatness. In Reveries, the series of abstract compositions and cultural specific subjects is an exploration of a changing society during its bid towards becoming a world power. A pivotal time in Chinese history when tradition physically and metaphorically mingles with modernity, Reveries is a reminder that if you close your eyes for too long, the world may never look like what you once remembered it to be.

Born and raised in the Lower East Side of New York City, David’s photographs are an observation into the dynamics between the environment and those who inhabit them. Working primarily with analog photographic materials and processes, David’s curiosity is shaped by the interaction between the materiality of a photograph, and the constant negotiation between chance and control. Best known for his black and white darkroom work and photo books, he has published three books, several of which are held in library collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Public Library, and the Center for Book Arts. In 2022, David was awarded the Corky Lee Image of Hope award by the New York State Assembly Member, recognizing his impact on the community through the Arts with his works, Where Did All the Flowers Go? and Some Chinatown Portraits.
