Salar de Ascotán - Limited Edition 1 of 10 Photograph

This photograph is part of a project I started in 2016 to document the entire Andes mountain range (world´s longest mountain chain) from Venezuela to Tierra del Fuego. The Andes are one of those places left on Earth where we can feel the primeval forces that have given rise to life on our planet, where we can walk for days without encountering another human being. Here the views are vast and the landscapes are alien, and absolutely mesmerizing. To be able to portray these landscapes in a systematic way is not just a goal - it is a privilege! The Ascotan salt flat is located on the border between Chile and Bolivia. Access is through a road that winds up the mountains until it opens up to an alley of volcanoes behind a large, dried-up salt lake. This photograph was taken in the midst of a storm, when the light of the setting sun broke through the clouds and lit the clouds from underneath.
