About The Artwork

Salerno viaggio is a portfolio of cyanotypes documenting a voyage via ferry over the Terennian Sea from Palermo to Salerno, culminating in images shot in Salerno. The negatives were shot on Ilford HP400 film with a 1959 Leica 3c camera. These were scanned into a computer to create digital negatives for the cyanotype process. The photos are cyanotypes, 24 x 36 cm, done on 43 x 57 cm 300g Saunders Waterford watercolour paper, toned in a black walnut hull solution to produce deep blue images with yellow-brown highlights. The cyanotype process is an artisanal alternative photographic technique, originally from 1842. Black walnut husk has been used for art and textile dyeing for millennia. More than one print may be made based on the same image. Due to the organic nature of the process, each version is unique.
