About The Artwork

A family of desert nomads forever travelling through the Cholisthan Desert in search of the Lost River Sarasvati. *Winner of Two Honourable Mention Awards in the International Photography Awards 2016* Title: Sarasvati di Khoj Series: In the Land of the Lost River Medium: Crystal Archive Print Edition: 3/3 About the Series: Cholisthan, a land riddled with mystery, where each sand dune has unbelievable tales to tell. Legend has it that the Lord of Wind and Water heard the princess, Phulann Rani, singing a romantic song while bathing in the sacred waters of the River Sarasvati. The Lord fell in love with the princess, and desired to take her to his abode in Mount Kailash in the high Himalayas. Infuriated by her refusal to submit to his wishes, he ordered wind and water to destroy Fort Murrot and everything around it. To thwart the Lord, the River Sarasvati changed it’s course and vanished, taking with it all but the faintest legend of what once lived on it’s banks. The only trace of this bygone civilization that now exists is on the faces of it’s people, forever travelling through the drifting sands in search of their lost river. Photographer Sapna followed them on their trail through the land long since abandoned by Sarasvati, and witnessed their unwavering determination to bring her home once again.

Influenced by literature and the cinema, my work focuses on narratives and storytelling, an approach I utilise in the realms of portrait, photojournalistic, and editorial photography. Hailing from a family of painters, writers, and poets, I developed an appreciation of all forms of art at an early age. This ode to the arts is present in my photographs, forever echoing stories of wonder, wordlessly. The recipient of an Honourable Mention Award in the Tokyo International Foto Awards 2019 and five Honourable Mentions in the 2018 and 2016 International Photography Awards, I am currently based in Lahore, Pakistan, and my work has been published in Forbes magazine.
