About The Artwork

From the photogram collection: "Shapes of my Heritage" This photogram accentuates the fragile and sensuous lines we enact in our daily lives - that is, the canvas of our life. I use the darkroom to manually document fictitious scenes from my Indian heritage, symbolically merging fact and fiction using both drawing and the darkroom as a medium. The image is de-contextualised to enable viewers to project their own worldviews to complete the picture. The ethereal quality of lines is achieved by hand-drawing the image on acetate using fine liners - the acetate is then processed in the darkroom using traditional documentary cameraless photographic techniques. Exposing the drawing to light creates a print without a camera on photographic paper, reflecting the rawness and essence of our own human nature, stripped down to black and white. The result is an attractive aesthetic that is both bold and delicate as well as modern and contemporary - perfect for admiring the nuances of traditional Indian culture and human life.
