ABOUT THE ARTWORK

On a drive through North Dakota in 2008, the sun was going down and I came across a sunflower field. With the sunflowers backlite by the sun, I had to make adjustments to light the sunflowers and keep the sunset in the background. This series is very personal to me. I haven't been back to North Dakota in many years.

My experience with photography started in the San Joaquin Valley of central California. One Saturday morning I saw an ice sickle formed on a dripping hose. I grabbed my mom's 35mm camera and took a photo. Mom didn't know I had taken a photo. It was weeks before she finished the roll and developed the film. I still remember her surprise when she saw the image. It was a great photo! That photo sparked a creative motivation that brings me joy every day. After continuing to take artistic photos for many years, I sold my first professional photo to an advertising agency in 1985. Studio lighting became an intense study for me when my children were growing up. I had lots of fun expressing my creativity, but I don't think my children liked it so much.
