About The Artwork

In May 1997 the Taliban in Afghanistan for the first time conquered the strategically important city of Mazar e Sharif in the north of the country. Of central importance in Mazar is the Blue Mosque, a place to which many Muslims go on pilgrimage because, according to legend, the shrine of Hazrat Ali is located here. For many Taliban the sight of the mosque was of extraordinary importance. They had never seen such a building before. Although there was a strict ban on photography under the Taliban, they tolerated my camera for a few hours on the first day of the invasion in Mazar. For Friday prayer they gathered on the square in front of the mosque. Later that day, the Taliban showed with a clear gesture that further photos were not allowed.
