Signature to Foy’s colorwork-the neon fluorescence of this striking depiction of an Amaryllis flower in full bloom was achieved entirely through the strategic use of light painting with multiple laser light sources in combination with a prolonged shutter speed. A wide array of both synthetically & naturally occurring environments, and character types are explored in the works of Toronto-based Duncan Foy. The Canadian-born (1991) artist who studied Commercial Photography at Sheridan College of Art & Design is best known for his highly stylized & vividly rendered Fashion, Portrait, and Still Life photographs that both please the eye and subvert expectations. Extraordinary in their tonal range, colourful clarity and artistic vision, Foy’s thoughtfully choreographed scenes and character studies are enhanced by his precision use of other-worldly lighting techniques as well as his signature fluorescent manipulation of color inspired initially by his time spent wandering the neon soaked streets of Tokyo as an exchange student learning Japanese. While the sculptural/photographic work of Japanese Flower Punk Azuma Makoto, the hyper realities of Benoit Paillé, as well as the beautifully nostalgic portraiture of William Eggleston (and his modern day counterpart Mark Peckmezian) offer evident aesthetic direction, Foy remains passionately dedicated to the endless possibilities of both digital and analog formats as effective mediums of self expression offered by the Visual Arts ecosystem in its entirety. Upon graduation from Sheridan, Foy was awarded the Canon Best In Show Award and received high honours in the department of Commercial Photography. Since Graduation, international brands have embraced Foy’s vision through partnerships including notable clients such as Sackville & Co, October's Very Own, The Globe & Mail, and Fashion Magazine. Foy has also been commissioned by the management of several rising Canadian musical artists including Mecha Maiko and Tobias Dray to produce striking album artwork that skillfully blurs the lines between the Fine Art & Commercial industry. Although Foy’s current photographic work is a far-cry from his early career working as a Coordinator of International Relations/Official Translator to the Japanese Government, he is no doubt a truly unique artist worthy of garnering the attention of collectors across the globe.
