Jaisalmer, nicknamed "The Golden city", lies in the heart of the Thar Desert (the Great Indian Desert) in the Indian state of Rajasthan. A World Heritage Site, known as the "Golden City," it's distinguished by its yellow sandstone architecture. The town is a former medieval trading center and stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone, crowned by a fort - a sprawling hilltop citadel buttressed by 99 bastions, which contains the palace and several ornate Jain temples. Many of the houses and temples are finely sculptured.
