About The Artwork

Few things are more imbued with meaning in culture and art than the horse. Although horses have only been domesticated for a little over 5,000 years, they first appeared in art over 30,000 years ago in Paleolithic cave paintings. They’ve appeared in the mythology of cultures around the world, and, to a striking extent, stand as symbols for many different qualities and ideas. For obvious reasons the horse has symbolized strength, power, speed, and endurance, as well as related qualities such as courage, heroism, confidence, vigor, and vitality. Their symbolic repertoire includes majesty, dignity, triumph, authority, and nobility, along with beauty, sexuality, passion, and virility. Not all associations are positive. Horses have also been used to symbolize war and anger. The New Testament Book of Revelations foresees the end of the world being marshaled in by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, riding mounts representing bloodshed, famine, death, and the Anti-Christ, while the Old Testament prophet Isaiah warned against relying on the false strength of horses, standing in for the false power of the material world. The idea of the stalking-horse and the story of the Trojan Horse both signify deception and trickery, and Freud referred to the subconscious id as a wild horse that needed to be reined in by the conscious mind. After a decades-long career as a commercial photographer I’ve turned my hand to producing more personal imagery. In my work I strive to evoke emotional and psychological truths by creating enigmatic, dream-like scenes steeped in symbolism. They depict impossibilities, paradoxes, and incongruities, but all rendered with precise, seamless realism. I’m inspired by the Surrealists, as well as by Renaissance art. Ideas for my images are sparked in a number of different ways, and each evolves as I weave them together from the raw materials of my photos and my imagination. Experimenting with different combinations of image elements until they take on a life of their own, I then begin the exacting detail work of making the impossible seem believable Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, I have lived for many years with my beautiful and inspiring wife on a steep hill in San Francisco, near our children and grandchildren.
