This photo was taken at Lake Chapala, Mexico. Each year, from November through March, thousands of pelicans make the journey from Canada to the shores of Lake Chapala to a small fishing village peninsula that juts out into the lake. At the end of the day, the fishermen throw out the useless heads and tails of their catch and all the pelicans scramble to get a piece of fish. In this instance, a heron grabbed the piece of fish that the pelicans were vying for.
A lot of amateur photographers come here and shoot the same cliched images of the pelicans swimming or flying and I was determined that if I made photos here they would be different.
Because both the herons and the pelicans are snow white, it was hard to see the heron. Thus I made the pelicans somewhat beige so that the heron stands out.
This photo can be made either 16 x 20 or 20 x 24 or even larger.
