Micky Jones' photographic career began in the 1930's in Kelowna, British Columbia as a high school student. In the 40's he worked as a photo-journalist for the Vancouver Sun and also as an independent freelancer. Armed with a Speed Graphic camera, Micky often shot Hollywood stars who were performing in Vancouver nightclubs. Among the celebrities who met Jones' lens were Yvonne De Carlo, a Vancouver native best known as the wife of Moses in The Ten Commandments, and as TV's Lilly Munster. Another was Kay Starr, American pop and jazz singer who had two #1 hits in the 1950s. Billy Eckstine, legendary bandleader of the Swing era, posed for Micky Jones in 1950. Eckstine had a few good players in his band including Miles Davis, Dizzie Gillespie, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Charlie Parker, and Sarah Vaughn. One of Jones' most memorable portraits is of singer Lena Horne when she was 32 years old. Horne was at the height of her film career and this image seems to capture the perfect combination of confidence, beauty, exuberance and vulnerability. In mid-career Jones focused more on travel photography, producing award winning images that have graced the pages of many magazines and journals. Micky Jones is a active nonagenarian, retired from active shooting and living in Bellingham, Washington.
