Winston Death Squad - Limited Edition 3 of 9 Photograph

This limited edition metal print is from a 4 year photo project I was immersed in while living in downtown Los Angeles. It was included in my solo exhibition at Gloria Delson Contemporary Arts Gallery on Spring Street in June 2014. The first two editions of this print sold during that exhibition. This street art tableaux was at the corner of Winston Alley and Los Angeles street. Originally I thought it was some kind of gang marking but later I found out it originated from an arts collective in Winston/Indian Alley called the Winston Death Squad. The Guy Fawkes figurine riding a unicorn was interesting in itself but the added visual elements of the expressive woman's face wearing sunglasses in the cigarette ad with the Mighty Ducks graffiti on the Los Angeles street sign helped situate this surreal scene firmly in a modern Los Angeles where the veneer has cracked. For those unfamiliar with this particular location it's where the recently gentrified Historic Core meets skid row and the toy district. This image is printed on aluminum with a dye transfer process that combines heat and pressure to embed the image into a coated substrate. It is a robust and archival medium that should last well over 100 years. There is a floating frame on the back of the metal print that stiffens the artwork and provides a hanging mechanism.
