Walking the streets of New York I began a series of work stemming from a fascination with the experience of being in an urban landscape so familiar and so foreign. We have all seen the archetypical New York apartment buildings with their external fire staircases and ornamental facades in movies, television shows and artworks. It is easy to forget the mundanity of everyday existence within these monumental buildings. In this work i blocked out the colours of all window in opaque blues and whites to create a reflective surface through which we cannot see and inside which the privacy of the inhabitants remained undisturbed. In one window though a young woman stood near the window talking on her phone looking outside. She stood out to me as a living human marker in a way. Marking our presence within these giant structures.

Nikki Willson works as a new media artist, video installation artist and photographer exploring issues of figuration, identity and otherness. Nikki has exhibited in a range of local and international art events and solo and group shows and her work has been acquired by private collectors and commissions. “Our lives exist within a world of constant movement and distraction. We are in constant negotiation between the space that we occupy and our own internal dialogue. There are moments however when everything becomes still and quiet. It is this sense of being outside of time that I am trying to capture in my work. I am also interested in mental health and neurodiversity, exploring issues of memory and identity. By manipulating the digital image I combine photography and painting to remove context and create narrative ambiguity. This ambiguity requires the viewer to fill the narrative space surrounding the work.
