This detail from the stunning Byzantine mosaics in the Basilica of San Vitale, Ravenna (c.540AD), focuses on the face of the Empress Theodora. The image has been reworked in an abstract “Pop” style as part of my “Icons” series. Theodora was, and remains, a highly controversial figure. Reputed to have been a scandalous dancer and courtesan in her youth (according to her detractors), her intellectual and political instincts made her a powerful influence on her husband, the Emperor Justinian. So essential to the orthodox Emperor was Theodora, that her illegal heretical beliefs were tolerated. Here she is depicted with a halo in this digital piece which incorporates scans and collage, building rich colour and texture in a bold graphic style. It is available as a limited edition print. Limited Edition of 35 highest quality giclée art prints on Hahnemule German Etching (310gsm). Signed and numbered by hand and accompanied with a Certificate of Authenticy. Delivered in Cardboard Tube. Size: A2: 594 X 420mm (with 30 mm horizontal and vertical borders)

Derek couturier samples art history and popular culture in a fusion of abstract and representational elements to subversive effect across paint, graphics, print, 3D and video pieces. Where the abstract can have a metaphysical dimension, the representational elements are rooted in a material and all too human world. These divergent strands are threaded together, to explore their contradictions, continuities and inconsistencies in a way that can be provocative, stimulating and sometimes humourous.
