Last of a series of three limited edition hand printed stone lithographs printed during residency at the Frans Masereel Centrum in Belgium. Each print is made up of spiraling 0 and 1 marks made directly onto the stone with an old rubber stamp. The rubber stamp was found during a scrapyard forage and was the only item left on the back of an empty truck. The title 'Binary' and the out of control spiraling zeros and ones is perhaps a way of describing my frustration with modern technology and my subsequent retreat to the comfort and control afforded by historical and out dated printing techniques. Each print in the series has been built up and layered to form a set of prints with increasing intensity. Printed on an offset lithography press on Zerkall litho paper.

As a passionate nature lover and outdoors person, Jan Philip Raath's work is mostly focused on ecological issues, especially on the overlap between human landscapes and "raw" nature. Often taking on the form of ephemeral research projects into the materiality of art production, his work emphasizes underlying ideas and processes that are regularly over looked or taken for granted. Due to the ever changing nature of his art practice he realizing projects in a wide range of media from sculpture and printmaking, to photography. He started his studies in fine arts at the University of the Free State in 2007. He went on to complete his BA and MFA in Fine Arts at the Michaelis School of Fine Arts in Cape Town, South Africa. Between studies he did an apprenticeship at a professional Printmaking studio, thereafter establishing his own traveling print studio. He is currently based in Auckland, New Zealand where he continues to pursue his love of representing the natural world through his art practice.
